Community Cares Homeless Shelter Support Worker Position

Under the direction of the Executive Director from the Lillooet Friendship Centre Society and subject to its policies and regulations, the Community Cares Homeless Shelter Support Worker will be responsible for participating in and supporting the delivery of the Community Cares Homeless Shelter’s programs and services.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor residents of Homeless Shelter; supervise and assist residents to meet their needs & answer questions;

  • Receive new clients, and ensure all intake paperwork is completed and a client file is created;

  • Perform Intake and Needs Assessments; develop individual Action Plans that are based on individual needs of clients, & that support social integration & economic self-sufficiency. Make referrals to appropriate agencies;

  • Provide Life Skills and Educational information that will support homeless individuals and families or those at imminent risk of homelessness to become self-sufficient i.e. networking, essential skills, communication etc.;

  • Provide food and clothing on an as needed basis to Homeless individuals and families staying in the shelter;

  • Make laundry facilities readily available to individuals staying at shelter, clean bedding, clothing and other accessories on daily basis;

  • Provide a Food Safe kitchen where clients can cook their meals, support clients to cook and clean-up or prepare and cook meals for residents of shelter;

  • Provide a culturally sensitive environment at all times, facilitate cultural activities and events i.e. drumming

  • Participate in fundraisers, elder’s luncheons and clothing distribution. Shop for materials and supplies; and

  • Create a network of resource people, and agencies in community who can help clients resolve the issues they are faced with and provide additional support as they work towards securing self-sufficiency.

ADMINISTRATION & PROMOTIONAL DUTIES:

  • Maintain Shelter user records and stats. Maintain all points of contact;

  • Prepare narrative and statistical report at the end of every month detailing program activities and usage;

  • Attend regular Shelter working group and staff meetings;

  •  Promote all programs and services of the community to individuals staying at shelter; and

  • Liaise with community partners & agencies around supports for homeless people overcoming their issues.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong supervisory skills and ability to monitor residents of Homeless Shelter;

  • Ability to recruit, coordinate and manage volunteers. Experience working within a set budget;

  • Ability to learn and maintain current Homeless Shelter program and implement new services as necessary;

  • Strong knowledge of St’at’imc Culture and Traditions an asset;

  • Experience completing reports and maintaining statistics;

  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, and communication skills;

  • Must show sensitivity and discretion to client needs;

  • Must be able to work with little supervision and as part of a team;

  • Must have valid drivers’ license and use of vehicle;

  • Must submit to and pass a criminal record check

  • Must have Food Safe Certificate; and

  • Must be willing to work different shifts.
