Lillooet Secondary School enrols approximately 205 students in Grades 8 through 12, of which 72% are of Indigenous ancestry. Lillooet Secondary is located in the District of Lillooet which lies on the unceded and traditional territory of the St’at’imc First Peoples. The school’s Action Plan for Learning guides the work of the school.


DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direction of the School Principal, the Indigenous Support Worker works with students of Indigenous ancestry. The successful applicant is expected to:

  • Act as an advocate for students.
  • Assist with and participate in the implementation of strategies that encourage student and caregiver involvement in school activities.
  • Act as a resource person to schools, students and caregivers.
  • Liaise regularly with caregivers and Band Education Coordinators.
  • Attend community meetings and functions, when invited by communities.
  • Display a positive attitude and act as a positive role model for students of Indigenous ancestry as well as all students in the school.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings and be involved in student-parent interviews upon request.
  • Encourage and promote cross-cultural awareness.
  • Assist with the planning and organization of school cultural activities and actively participate in those events.
  • Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the principal.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent plus a minimum of one year of Post-Secondary Education in Indigenous studies, human services, life skills, substance abuse healing programs, or basic counseling strategies.
  • Applicants must be of Indigenous ancestry.
  • Experience working with Elders and Indigenous resource staff and demonstrated ability to recognize their needs and sensitivities.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of local Indigenous language and culture.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous educational issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills including current technology use skills.
  • Successful experience working with elementary or secondary age Indigenous students (as appropriate).
  • A working knowledge of school programs and resources available.
  • Commitment to working as a member of the school team in support of students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative and willingness to work as a team member with staff and community.
